We provide quality independent advice and information to governments and communicate ideas and analysis.

Our contribution to public debate and policy formulation is underpinned by our independence, transparency and community-wide perspective.

We have five main functions: inquiries and advice requested by government; Commission-initiated research; ongoing performance monitoring and benchmarking; competitive neutrality complaints; and safeguard action investigations.

We have seven work streams: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Stream, Climate Change and Energy, Data and Digital, Environment and Water, Health and Ageing, Industry and Trade, and Productivity.

We are led by a Chair, a Deputy Chair, Commissioners and senior staff.

The PC is committed to accountability and transparency by publishing procedures and other legal documents in the public interest.

The Productivity Commission was created as an independent authority in 1998 to replace the Industry Commission, the Bureau of Industry Economics, and the Economic Planning Advisory Commission.

The PC was established under the Productivity Commission Act 1998.
